Silent Screams : Where Silence Speaks Volumes
The tragic incident at Sharda University involving the death of a second-year BDS student in her hostel room, has brought to light disturbing issues of mental health and institutional accountability. The student's suicide note which has been widely circulated, weights two faculty members, "Mahendra Sir" and "Shairy Ma'am," for allegedly subjecting her to prolonged mental torture and humiliation. The note, which reads, "Agar main mar gayi, to Mahendra Sir aur Shairy Ma'am ko jail bhejna. Inhone mujhe mentally torture kiya. Main kaafi time se stress mein hoon," was found in her room.
Following the student's death, protests by family and friends were erupted within the university. Students have alleged that the suicide note was tampered with and that protesters were physically assaulted with laathi charge for speaking out. The fact that students preserved the note by sharing it on social media underscores the gravity of the situation and the distrust in the university's handling of the matter. It's also worth noting that the victim had previously voiced her concerns about the accused teachers to various disciplinary committees within the university, but no action was taken. This lack of response further exacerbates the situation, and as of now the university has not released an official statement.
The juxtaposition of a Supreme Court judge's visit to the college a day before the incident, for the inauguration of their moot court symbolising equality, justice, and peace, adds a layer of irony to the situation. Furthermore, the alleged scheduled visit of a legal representative on the day of the incident stands as a prime example of foreshadowing , pushing the immediacy for urgent action and reform within the university. The arrest of the two faculty members is a step towards justice, but it does not solve the deeper systemic issues.
The case at Sharda University is not an isolated incident. Similar cases have been reported across India, from Balasore (FM College) to Noida, where students have faced abuse of authority, lack of support, and a culture of silence. This raises a critical question: how many more students must suffer before universities begin to hold teachers accountable for their actions? This situation calls for a thorough investigation and for the implementation of preventative measures to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.
Until next time
